The Netball Taranaki development team have been busy delivering netball skills in low decile schools throughout the region. In total, the team will have visited 32 schools by the time this netball KiwiSport programme concludes in term two.
KiwiSport is a government funding initiative to promote sport for school-aged children. Last year Netball Taranaki secured funding for the netball equipment used in the skills sessions and began inviting low decile schools in Taranaki to be involved. All the schools identified have taken up the offer.
Participants vary from year 1-13, with the age groups being determined by each school. Participants enjoy the allocated four hours of basic netball skills and at the end of the sessions the school is given the five netballs, a set of bibs and a gear bag.
Netball Development Officer Lead Corina Faamai said the KiwiSport Programme has been enjoyable to be part of. "Participants take away some netball knowledge which is great and they have loads of fun too. Many male participants have loved the sessions as well as the girls" Corina said.
